Hearts are breaking around the capital and beyond after tonight’s devastating news – Canberra’s hero Connie Johnson has lost her long battle with cancer.
Connie’s Gold Logie winning brother, Samuel, made the announcement via the Love Your Sister Facebook page..
Connie’s passing comes just a day after she received one of Australia’s highest honours – a Medal of the Order of Australia.
Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove stopped by Connie’s hospice bedside himself to give her the medal, in recognition of her tireless work in the fight against cancer.
One of Connie’s biggest achievements was the Big Heart Project, which saw the public come together to build a giant heart of 5 cent coins at the Lyneham Netball Courts back in May.
The project helped raise over $2.5 million, more than ten times her target!
Samuel’s asked those wanting to leave a tribute, to do so at the Love for Connie website, so the family can cherish them forever.
“I’m off to cuddle the fam and warmly embrace an exquisite whisky, in memory of my sister, who did so bloody well, from start to finish. Thanks for everything, Connie Cottonsocks.” - Samuel
